Maldives says building 10k flats in reclaimed suburb to begin soon

Government announced Wednesday that a project to construct 10,000 flats in the reclaimed suburb of Hulhumale would be awarded soon.

Speaking in Alif Dhaal atoll Maamigili, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom said several foreign companies had submitted proposals to build the housing units under the second phase of Hulhumale development. Officials at his office are currently reviewing the proposals, he added.

Government had late last year revealed that the recipients of the flats constructed in the reclaimed suburb of Hulhumale under the social housing project would be announced in early this year.

Around 15,000 people had applied for the 1,100 state built housing units in the island.

Four hundred flats will be constructed for the first category targeting applicants registered in the Male registry. The second category, aimed for long term atoll immigrants in the capital, has 330 flats, and another 330 flats are allocated for the third category which targets land owners in Male struggling with small lands.

Authorities have settled to transfer the flats of the third category to the first two on account of land owners’ refusal to relinquish their lands.

Housing ministry’s statistics show that 7,384 forms had been submitted for the first category, 8241 for the second and two families had lobbied for the third.

The social housing projects targeted for Hulhumale are part of the government’s wider plan of consolidating the country’s dispersed population.

After having added 240 hectares and reclaiming land up until Farukolhufushi – an island in the same lagoon as Hulhumale – the Hullhumale is 410 hectares and is large enough to house an additional 100,000 people.

This capacity, in addition to essentially being the capital city’s suburban extension, makes Hulhumale an ideal home for those living in islands with scarce resources and access to education and health care.
